The sky turns and the umbrella appears — pulled from a handbag, a glovebox, the side pocket of a carry-on. A press of the button and it opens itself, the canopy unfurling in whatever artwork the brand chose to live there. Logo, pattern, photograph, gradient. The sublimation print runs edge to edge across all eight panels, and again down the matching sleeve, so the object reads as designed rather than stickered.
The frame is three-stage folding, 53cm closed, opening to just under a metre across. Black metal ribs, metal shaft, metal tips. A plastic handle with a woven elastic loop for the wrist, a velcro tie to keep it neat between showers. Automatic open and close — useful in the half-second between car door and building entrance, when one hand is already holding something else.
